MAYA ART 101 - LESSON THREE

This painting of a Sapo, or Frog, is one of my favorites. From a line drawing done fourteen hundred years ago, to the colorful painted image that you see before you, was quite a jump. No pun intended. This Maya Spirit's name is NAUM, that is from my research. When I painted this unusual character, the first thing I noticed to be very unique was the fact, that on his lower backside there is a face of a man. Women will all agree that it is a face of a MAN. The large eye tells us that he is an intelligent man. He is a young man, he has all his teeth. He is also happy in that he is smiling. The position of the face is telling us, if we are observant, that NAUM is birthing the intelligence of mankind. Naum is a creator Mayan Spirit. Therefore, when you read other Maya text, the painting and name make a lock on each other. Without this type of insight by an artist, the Mayan name might not ever be known. Artists are always more observant than other people. One thing I like about this painting is the way the Sapos front appendage, which is colored brown, curves. It makes a perfect fit in the curves in the Sapos jaw, and the blue colored part of his head. The blue parts on his head remind me of a way the artist wanted to tell us that this Spirit was very intelligent. It is a way of conveying to us brain matter, the red dots representing brain cells.  Now with all the bright psychedelic colors on Naum, one might wonder that the artist was on drugs. Not the case, I have never used any drugs. The background is a tribute to, as I said in previous lectures, String Theory. The Mayan Spirits live in another dimension, and this type of  background helps emphasize the fact. The Mayan Civilization saw that many of the Spirits helped mankind and NAUM was certainly one of those Spirits.  I look forward to your comments, they will be posted as soon as I review them.

MAYA ART 101 - LESSON TWO

WELCOME TO THIS STRANGE LOOKING MAYAN CREATURE. He looks like a rhinoceros from Africa. But, we know that can not possibly be true, since the Mayan Civilization was in Mexico and Central America. Or, were they able to travel in ways we do not understand, today? For some reason this chair is very low to the ground, while other chairs we see in Mayan Artwork are positioned up higher, and more normal for Western Civilizations. I also must admit that  his hat looks like today's ball cap. He is an interesting Mayan Spirit, who I believe from my research is named HUNAB KU. This Spirit helped in the creation of the world. One of the key points as to what was this Mayan Spirit's name was what he held between his hands, he does seem to have fingers, the object to me seems to be the World. I painted it gold.  Yes, it could be something else, but it holds more significance perhaps than a body part. What HUNAB KU holds around his neck I have yet to understand. One thing I am sure of, it is not a business man's tie. But, what if it is, that would be even stranger than strange. This background is a tribute to String Theory, this is my way of saying the Mayan Spirits are in another dimension. I am waiting for your comments about what you think, all your comments will be posted as soon as I review them.

Mayan Art 101- Lesson One

We will start with one of my painting that I did as a watercolor first. Then I painted this Mayan glyph several times in Acrylic paint. After hanging several of them up on my walls, I started to wonder? Yes, I could see a old man's face. I could see that he was connected in some ways to a bird. The wings and bird feet were sure to give that away. It was a painting that reminded me of Picasso, he would paint in this manner. My research led me to name the Maya Spirit  TEPEU. A SKY SPIRIT, HENCE THE APPEARANCE OF A MAN-BIRD. HE WAS ALSO A CREATOR OF LIFE. THIS IS REPRESENTED BY THE EGGS. HE HELPED IN THE CREATION OF MAN. I put several of them up for sale on kukulcanmedia.com. Then being an artist was I satisfied with my work? At first I was very happy.  Then I noticed something was missing. You see all the different places where there are hash marks. In this painting there are a lot of them. On the wings of this mystical creature. Then below what could be an egg of this bird-man, the circle on the lower right. And there are three more places. What was the significance of the hash marks? Did they add some thing to the painting I was missing. Well, it took me months of looking at them hanging on the walls to remember that the hash marks would have originally been carved in stone. So what did that mean? It could only mean one thing. On the original stone when they would have been painted over fifteen hundred years ago, the paint need to grip the stone to stay on it for some time. It rained in the tropics, so anything that the sculptor could do to get paint to stick he must have done. (Maybe there were females that did this work, too.)
Now, what color of paint was used. I like to think it was pure gold, like gold leaf. But, will this painting look good with all the hash marks painted in gold? That is in the future for me to decide. The wings and egg are sure to be find in gold, but what of the other places? I will have to paint them in and decide. The two spots to the lower far left could also be considered wings. They have semi circles above them, maybe representing the arch of the top of a wing. But, this creature seems to have several wings, not just the normal two. More Picasso thinking? This one painting can give us all something to think, long and hard about. Who is right, only the future knows. The bottom line is that it is a very interesting painting!

MY NAME IS JUAN FRANCISCO BLANCO, well that is the name I use when I paint. I live in Mexico. And I must say that I am very happy when painting. I do get lost in the creation of something new.
